AV Festival 14: Extraction
Rossella Biscotti, Kevin van Braak
1st March - 31st March 2014
Rossella Biscotti & Kevin van Braak's new work for AV Festival is part of the ongoing series of sculptures After four rotations of A, B will make one revolution (2009-2013), which transfers existing figurative socialist sculptures into minimalist objects of the same material, weight, historical reference and name. The scale of the new work is small compared with the original sculptures due to its abstraction. This complex relationship raises questions about historical symbolism, whilst the process of melting metal is suggestive of the end of a regime or ideology, when sculptures may be destroyed and sold as raw material. The new installation references a bronze statue in Moscow of Alexey Stakhanov, the Russian coal miner and hero of socialist labour and cast iron workers’ statues representing Industry and Construction from the Green Bridge (Žaliasis Tiltas) in Vilnius, Lithuania.
Curated and produced by AV Festival. AV Festival 14: Extraction explores the raw materials that create our experience of the world, from their origins deep in the ground, to their extraction, transformation and global exploitation. The Festival programme includes 11 exhibitions, 36 film screenings, 10 concerts and 11 new commissions.
