Nine artists celebrate the working process and
through a wide range of practices share an
obsession with materials. Whilst leaning towards abstraction, other subordinate narratives drift in and at times overlap. Figurative elements - a shoe in Peake’s painting; McCarthy’s cuboid plinths; an orchid cut-out by Nissen; scroll forms and apertures of Babington – all seem to indulge the artist and viewer as playful diversions. Illusions occupy the surfaces but leave it up to the viewer how to place them. Babington and Ricci’s tessellated patterns and Gillam and Hodgson’s brush marks all take pleasure in decorative repetition. Charles and Zakiewicz both marvel at the textures of metals and industrial paint finishes. Peake’s language pops up in fragments, like pebbledash.
