Tees Colour Register

Rachael Clewlow                                              9th January - 22nd February

This exhibition of new art by the Teesside-born, Tyneside-based artist Rachael Clewlow presents a body of work made in parallel with the vibrant, 50-metre vinyl mural on the upper windows of Middlesbrough railway station’s concourse, which was commissioned as part of the ‘Most Creative Station’ programme. ‘Tees Colour Register’ is a continuation of Clewlow’s investigations into how to translate the world around her into abstract paintings, drawings, and prints.

To create these works, Clewlow’s art process involves three stages: ‘data collection’ in the field, ‘distilling and interpreting’ at the desk; and ‘making’ in the studio. For ‘Tees Colour Register’ data collection involved travelling across the Tees Valley railway network, from Bishop Auckland to Saltburn, and Whitby to Hartlepool. Taking an intuitive process, Clewlow documented what she saw once a minute for each route. From this data an overall palette for the project was developed with over 1,060 distinct hues from which the art works were derived.

Taken as a whole, Tees Colour Register presents a joyous, technicolour vision of a region that is often maligned for an assumed bleakness in its post-industrial vistas. Seen through Clewlow’s eyes there is order, beauty and unending potential.
